Gordon Hart Architects was founded in 1984.
After qualifying as an Architect at UCT in 1979, Gordon worked for one of Cape Town’s larger Architectural practices. This was followed by a year with a practice in Hertfordshire in the UK before returning to Cape Town to establish his own practice.
As a student Gordon worked for the Scottish Special Housing Association in Edinburgh Scotland. From this developed an interest and understanding of multi unit housing developments, both self standing individual houses and blocks of flats. This type of work has developed into the main workload of the practice. Typical projects would be developments of between 20 and 80 affordable homes or apartments where the design of the environment surrounding the buildings becomes as important as the buildings themselves.
Over 1000 homes in more than 20 developments in the Tableview / Parklands area alone bear testament to the practice’s expertise in this type of development.
While housing forms the main focus of the practice this has not meant that the practice has not undertaken a broader spectrum of projects. Over the years the practice has been involved in the design and erection of Shopping complexes, Schools, Industrial Buildings, Restaurants, small hotels and a number of up market, one off, houses many of these in estates such as Shelley Point, Atlantic Beach and Avignon where adherence to a Design Manual adds to the challenge of the designer.
The practice does not only offer conventional Architectural Services but with our experience in housing we act as Land Use Consultants and often work with Surveyors and Planners in formulating Land Use Applications for the rezoning and sub-division of property.
The practice has always been committed to the education and employment of students from all walks of life and to assist in their development as members of the Architectural Profession.
This assistance has included lecturing at Peninsula Technikon, now Cape Peninsula University of Technology, serving as an external examiner and advisory board member of this latter institution’s Department of Architecture, mentorship of students and giving students meaningful employment during their mandatory in service training year.
